Italy has confirmed a fall release, with other European countries expected to follow.
Although Amazon Studios has nixed its U.S. release of Woody Allen’s 48th film, A Rainy Day in New York, the film will be released overseas.
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed Italian media reports that distributor Lucky Red is set to release the film in Italy on Oct. 3. The distributor also released his last Amazon film Wonder Wheel in Italy, where it grossed $3.5 million at the box office, making the country the top foreign earner for the film.
According to news reports, the film is also likely to be distributed in France, Belgium and the Netherlands where Rainy Day already has distribution agreements with Allen’s Gravier Productions.
After the #MeToo movement shook Hollywood, further scrutiny was placed on Woody Allen and reports that he molested his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow when she was seven.
According to sources, Amazon Studios tried to cut ties and give Rainy Day, which features a romance between a middle-aged man (Jude Law) and a young woman (Elle Fanning), back to Allen. But he responded by suing for $68 million for breach of contract, his guaranteed minimum payment for his four-picture deal with Amazon.
Actors from Rainy Day have since said they regretted working on it, with Rebecca Hall donating her salary on the film to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund and Timothee Chalamet donating his earnings to RAINN, Time’s UP and the LGBT Center in New York.
Law told the New York Times in November that he thought it was a “terrible shame” that the film was being shelved.
Although the Italian release would be a prime date for a Venice Film Festival premiere, a representative for Lucky Red said they have no current news on festival plans.
Venice Film Festival chief Alberto Barbera has previously said he will not base his curatorial decision on accusations, as the festival does not operate as a court of law. “I’m not a judge. I’m not a lawyer,” Barbera told THR. Last year’s festival included a film by director Bruce Weber, who has been accused by multiple men of sexual assault.
