Rascall Flatts band member Jay DeMarcus is opening up about a decision he made in his youth to give up his daughter for adoption.
According to People, the now 48-year-old musician shared in his memoir, “Shotgun Angels: My Story of Broken Roads and Unshakeable Hope” that in his early 20s his then-girlfriend, Maggie, became pregnant after just one month of dating and “abortion was never an option.”
“[Maggie and I] discussed many options, including getting married and raising the child ourselves, but we quickly determined we’d be making that decision for the wrong reason,” he wrote. “It became evident that Maggie wanted nothing to do with me. There was no interest in the two of us somehow working things out so we might raise our child together.”
DeMarcus shared that his mother tried to step in to raise the child, but said Maggie decided to move forward with an adoption outside of the family and “didn’t want either one of us in [their daughter’s]life.”
“That was a hard pill to swallow,” he added. “I understand that sometimes life sends us reeling because of unexpected situations. But my heart in that moment, though scared, still desired to be in this beautiful child’s life.”
DeMarcus shared that the adoptive family was supposed to give his daughter a letter at 14, telling her that he “loved her, did not abandon her, and have tried several ways to make it possible to be in her life.”
Decades later, the Rascall Flatts singer has never met his daughter, but said in the book that his heart “finds satisfaction in knowing that she ended up with a wonderful family.”
In May 2004, DeMarcus married Allison Alderson, a former beauty queen from Tennessee. The couple has a daughter, Madeline Leigh, and son Dylan Jay.
